Capo third fret

D
The old preacher man stood there in the pulpit,
G D
The church house was empty almost;

His eyes filled with tears, his mind filled with memories,
E A
Of not so long ago.
D
When the church house was full, not one pew was empty,
G D
The altar was stained with Saints' tears;
G D G
As he stands there this morning and sounds out the warning;
D A D
Once again letting them know.
D D
There's a Heaven to gain, and a Hell to shun;
G D
The way is still straight, there's a race to be run.
D D
You can live as you please, but you must pay the cost;
G A D
And the highway to Heaven still goes by the cross.
D
Some of the members thought he was "old fashion",
G D
Unwilling to change with the times.

So they found a new church with more modern day preachers,
E A
Who were willing to let things go by.
D
But the old preacher stood for what he believed in,
G D
And what he had preached forty years;
G D G
As he stands there this morning in a near empty church house,
D A D
His opening remarks are these words:
D D
There's a Heaven to gain, and a Hell to shun;
G D
The way is still straight, there's a race to be run.
D D
You can live as you please, but you must pay the cost;
G A D
And the highway to Heaven still goes by the cross.
D
Now the old preacher man stands there in that city;
G D
The city he's preached of so long.

Oh, but he's never seen such a great congregation
E A
All gathered to welcome him home
D
And he's never heard more beautiful singing,
G D
That is coming from that heavenly band.
D
He's preached his sermon,
G D
He's carried his last burden.
D A D
He's a rest in that heavenly land.
SPOKEN NO CHORDS
But He'd still wants you to know.

D D
There's a Heaven to gain, and a Hell to shun;
G D
The way is still straight, there's a race to be run.
D D
You can live as you please, but you must pay the cost;
G A D
And the highway to Heaven still goes by the cross.

IT formatted strange so the letters are not exactly placed where they should be just listen for exactly where to change chords

This song was originally wrote by Eddie street, the third verse about the old preacher man stands there in that city was wrote about my pappaw, he was on his way to sing at his funeral in 2000 they had been long time friends and as he was driving god gave him this last verse and he had to pull over to write it down and he sung it at the funeral and the people about tore the funeral home down shouting and glorifying god. He later sold the song to a group to record it and sing it but would not sell the third verse at the time, I'm not sure if he has allowed anyone to have it to record now or not.

HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN
by The Rochesters

The old preacher man stood there in the pulpit,
The church house was empty almost;
His eyes filled with tears, his mind filled with memories,
Of not so long ago.

When the church house was full, not one pew was empty,
The altar was stained with Saints' tears;
As he stands there this morning and sounds out the warning;
Once again letting them know.

There's a Heaven to gain, and a Hell to shun;
The way is still straight, there's a race to be run.
You can live as you please, but you must pay the cost;
And the highway to Heaven still goes by the cross.

Some of the members thought he was "old fashion",
Unwilling to change with the times.
So they found a new church with more modern day preachers,
Who were willing to let things go by.

But the old preacher stood for what he believed in,
And what he had preached forty years;
As he stands there this morning in a near empty church house,
His opening remarks are these words:

There's a Heaven to gain, and a Hell to shun;
The way is still straight, there's a race to be run.
You can live as you please, but you must pay the cost;
And the highway to Heaven still goes by the cross.

You can live as you please, but you must pay the cost;
And the highway to Heaven still goes by the cross.

This isn't sheet music or anything but this is how I play it and how I've always heard it played. Sorry it isn't in better form but hopefully it will give you a good idea of how to play it.

(d)The old preacher man stood there in the pulpit,
The (G) church house was empty almost (D);
His eyes filled with tears, his mind filled with memories,
Of (E) not so long (A) ago.
(D) When the church house was full, not one pew was empty,
The (G) altar was stained with Saints' (D) tears
As he stands there this morning and (G) sounds out the (D) warning;
Once again (A) letting them (D) know.

(D) There's a Heaven to gain, and a (G) Hell to (D) shun;
The way is still straight, there's a race to be run.
You can live as you please (G) , but you must pay the (D) cost;
And the highway to (G) Heaven still (A) goes by the (D) cross.
