I remember that song from the 70's very well. The version I remember was by Roger Wiles. Is that the one you remember, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XNy_a78kW8

The song the original message is looking for is "Rejoice" by Moose Smith from the album "Call of the Moose" and the opening lines are

The day has come
The day for which I've wept and prayed.

I have the sheet music at home from a music book from the 80s.

I BELIEVE THIS IS IT.

WHEN I LEFT MY FATHER'S HOUSE I WAS WELL SUPPLIED.
I MADE A MISTAKE AND I DID WRONG,
NOW I'M DISSATISFIED

I BELIEVE I'LL GO BACK HOME I BELIEVE I'LL GO BACK HOME
I BELIEVE I'LL GO BACK HOME
ACKNOWLEDGE I DONE WRONG.

HIS FATHER SAW HIM COMING
HE MET HIM WITH A SMILE
HE THREW HIS ARMS AROUND HIM
SAID HERE'S MY WONDERING CHILD.

THE OTHER SON GOT JEALOUS
THIS I HEARD HIM SAY
YOU GAVE MY BROTHER HIS PORTION
AND I NEVER WENT AWAY.

WHEN THE PRODIGAL SON RETURNS ONCE AGAIN.
NO SHOES ON HIS FEET ALL BATTERED BY SIN.
HIS FATHER LOOKED DOWN THAT LONG DUSTY ROAD.
BROUGHT HIM A RING AND THE VERY BEST ROBE.

SO GO KILL THE CALF THE FATHER THEN SAID.
THERE'S PLENTY TO EAT THE TABLE IS SPREAD.
MY SON WHO WAS LOST IS BACK HOME AGAIN.
FOR HE IS SO TIRED OF LIVING IN SIN.

I'LL SAY TO MY FATHER, I'M NOT WORTHY YOU SEE.
I JUST WANT TO BE A SERVANT FOR THEE.
I'VE LOST ALL I HAD, I'M HUNGRY AND COLD.
AND HIS FATHER THEN WELCOMED HIM BACK TO THE FOLD.

HOPE THIS IS IT

A very hard to find song for me - The Prodigal Son

[g] a prodigal son once [c] strayed from his [g] father
To travel a land of [a] hunger and [d] pain
And [g] now I can see the [c] end of my [g] journey
I'm going to [d] heaven a-[g] gain.

I leave you the day, to help all your neighbors
I leave you the night, to solemnly pray
So try to repent and ask for forgiveness
We'll meet up in heaven, someday.

Goodbye to this world, with all it's sorrows
Goodbye to the fields, that I used to roam
I'm going away where, life is eternal
My shepherd is callin me home.

From out of the sky, he's coming to meet me
To wash all my sins and call me his own
His servants will bring, a ring for my finger
And never no more will I roam.

I hope this is the one.
It is by Hank Williams
GOD BLESS

Hi Dean Milley
I recall that song from a few of Jimmy Swaggart's albums. I used to have it in one of his songbooks, but it wore out many years ago.
These words are as close as my 'old' memory can get. Hope they help. Exact words MAY not always be critical, cuz we're always after the message in the song, too?

----------------------
When I look back to yesterday, and upon the many years I wasted. And I think about the many nights of hunger I spent out in the cold.
I remember warming by the fire, at Father's house, the food and how it tasted. Thinkin' bout the life I'm leading, is needing love and love's back there at home.

Chorus
It's over now. Its over I'm going home. It's over no,w it won't be long The prisons of my past, couldn't hold me I'm free at last. My Father I see Him now, waiting for me. It's over now.

I can almost hear my father saying, go kill the fatted calf and spread the table. Then go and tell the singers to prepare to sing the Welcome Song. Then bring the finest ring of gold, and with it, bring the finest robe of sable. To place upon the cold and weary shoulders of my child, he's coming home.

Chorus
It's over now. Its over I'm going home. It's over no,w it won't be long The prisons of my past, couldn't hold me I'm free at last. My Father I see Him now, waiting for me. It's over now.
