It was in an old red paperback hymnal that belonged to my godfather. If memory serves me correctly the hymnal was from around the nineteen twenties. I don’t remember the title.

VERSE 1
One day Jesus came from heaven
that our sins might be forgiven
and to redeem us from the curse of broken law.
How his enemies did hate him,
day by day they sought to slay him,
yet he humbly stood before them like a dove.

CHORUS
Don’t you hear the hammer ringing?
Can’t you feel old death a stinging?
But when Christ arose the sting of death was gone.
He ascended up to Glory,
Left us here to tell the story
And he’s by his father pleading for you and me.

VERSE 2
When he died the sun stopped shining,
loved ones stood before him pining,
as they watched them nail their master to the tree (?)
Can’t you hear the savior groaning
as the world was all in mourning
when he cried out, “It is finished!” then he died.

—Chorus—

—End—

The way WE sang the chorus in the 60's:

Don't you hear the bells are ringing
Don't you hear the angels singing
It's a glorious hallelujah jubilee
In that far off sweet forever
just beyond that shining river
When they ring those golden bells
For you and for me

This is how I learned this song entitled “The Crucifixion”.

This is how I remember the song being sung"¦

Verse
1. One day Jesus came from heaven,
that our sins might be forgiven.
An example of our Heavenly Father's love.
How his enemies did hate him,
One by one they sought to slay him,
But humbly he stood before them like a dove.

Chorus
Can't you hear the hammers ringing?
Can't you feel old death a stinging?
But when Christ arose that sting of death was gone!
He ascended up to glory and left me here to tell the story.
By His fathers side, He pleads for you and me.

2. When he died the sun stopped shining
loved ones all around him crying;
when they nailed my blessed Savior to the tree.
Can't you hear the Savior groaning,
with his mother 'round him moaning,
and at last he cried 'It's finished'
then he died.

How well I remember Sister Hattie Lassiter singing this song many years ago at Calvary Baptist Church in Haverstraw, New York. Miss Hattie, as we all called her, was a truly great gospel singer. She is still alive, now 90 years old and suffering from dementia.

There are more verses to this song. A few lines I barely remember are:

His enemies how they did hate him,
One by one they sought to slay him,
But Jesus rose above them all just like a dove.

When he died, the sun stopped shining.
His loved ones around him crying,
Till at last he cried, "It's finished,"
The job was done.

Does anyone know the verses?

Line three in the second stanza should read: But when Christ arose the sting of death was gone

All I know is a phrase - Can't you hear the hammer ringing

Can't you hear the hammer ringing?

But when Christ was born the sting of death was gone.
He ascended up to glory,
Left me here to tell the story.
By his Father's side he pleads for you and me.
