Hymn story with missionary's wife dying when blood jar dropped.

I've heard twice the story behind a missionary writing a hymn, after his wife's death. His wife needed blood, and it was being brought to her hospital room by a nurse, who dropped it (in a glass container), so that the blood was lost and the woman died. The missionary sang the song he wrote, at his wife's funeral. I don't feel like the hymn is obscure, but I just don't know which hymn it is connected to. It is a song sort of about joy in trial? "It will be worth it all" comes to mind, but I don't think that it right.
