THE GRAVE CAN'T HOLD ME

I MAY NOT BE LIVING, WHEN JESUS RETURNS.
BACK TO THIS WORD, TO TAKE US HOME.
BUT IF I AM SLEEPING, BENEATH THE COLD CLAY.
I'LL RISE UP WITH POWER, ON THAT GREAT JUDGEMENT DAY.

NOW DEATH IS THE MASTER, OVER ALL THE LAND.
NO ONE CAN ESCAPE, FROM HIS DREADED HAND
SO WHEN THE LORD CALLS YOU, THEN YOU MUST GO AWAY.
TO SLEEP THERE IN SILENCE, BENEATH THE COLD CLAY.

I NOW HAVE GOD’S SPIRIT, DOWN DEEP IN MY SOUL.
AND I’M ON MY WAY, TO THAT BLEST ABODE.
SO YOU SEE IT DON'T MATTER, TO ME EITHER WAY.
WHETHER I AM ALIVE, OR ASLEEP ON THAT DAY.

CHORUS

THE GRAVE CAN'T HOLD ME, FOR I SHALL COME OUT
WITH VOICE OF TRIUMPH, I'LL RISE UP AND SHOUT.
OH GRAVE WHERE'S THY VICTORY, OH DEATH WHERE'S THY STING.
I'LL SHOUT IT SO LOUD, THE HEAVENS WILL RING.

Wow, thanks so much for sharing the fascinating story behind the story of this wonderful hymn. Regardless of whatever credit was given here on earth, it's wonderful to know that her good deeds follow her and that her words continue to bless people to this day. God bless you!

This song was written by my great aunt, Doris Graves from Parsons, Tn., she wrote it on her death bed when she was dying of cancer. The 1st person to record it was Don Johnson from Memphis, Tn. However because my great grandmother didn't know how to handle it, her name was Ola Graves, Aunt Doris was never given the credit she disevred, so if you research the song, it will pull up under Ola Graves & not Doris Graves, it bothered my great-grandmother very much that Aunt Doris was not getting the credit for writing the song & they tried to fix it but were unable to. I believe Aunt Doris died in 1961, but I do not know when Bro. Don recorded the song. Aunt Doris was a wonderful Christian lady & her story of her faith & beleaf in God was amazing!

Well I may not be living
When Jesus returns back to this old world
to call us on home
but if I am sleeping
beneath the cold clay
I'll rise up in power on the great judgment day

Now death is the master
All over the land
No-one can escape from its mighty hand
When the lord calls you,
You must go away to sleep in the silence
Beneath the cold clay.

The grave can't hold me
For I shall come out.
With a voice of triumph
I'll rise up and shout
Oh grave where's thy victory,
Oh death where's thy sting
I'll shout it so loudly
the Heavens will ring.

Now I have God's Spirit
Down deep in my soul
And I'm on my way to that blessed abode
And it matters not to me either way
Whether I am alive or asleep on that day.
