Well that was a blast from the past. Pamela Verrall was my music teacher in high school Aldershot around 1970. She also wrote a Carribbean carol which was broadcast on BBC TV about 1972??? I was the hapless xylophone player in that broadcast which aired on Christmas Eve! Now I KNOW I am getting old! 😂

I was also at Aldershot High and distinctly remember Pamela Verrall introducing HER song to our school choir. I remember the performance for the BBC programme included it- I think I was accompanying on guitar. I subsequently taught this hymn to many school children over the years, and citing it as her song. Claire Cull (nee Bonsey).

Yes, Pam Verrall did indeed write this hymn - she was a family friend, and was, I believe, Head of Music at Aldershot High. My mother Jean Rogers taught music there at the same time.

I was at Aldershot County high school when Mrs Pam Verrall wrote this hymn and in the school choir when we sang it at Aldershot Methodist Church for an episode of a bbc radio program that I can't remember the name of! Mrs Verrall was a lovely lady God Rest. Sandra Kay nee Clements

The writer, Pamela Verrall taught music at Aldershot County High (later Aldershot Manor) in the 60s and 70s. She wrote a number of hymns, which were collected in a book. This was her best I believe.

A characteristic of her piano playing was a deal of vamping with the left hand.

It was a regular in our school assembly and it always made me feel a bit emotional. I've never forgotten it and it is really a beautiful song.
