Caller searching for hymn - God doesn't make us go against our will

Post by Guest » Sat Mar 08, 2008 10:54 pm

I am the new pastor of a church in Maine. Someone just called me asking if anyone would know the hymn (she called it a ballad or a stroy with words) that included the lyric, "God doesn't make us go against our will, He just makes us willing to go" She also said that the hymn or poem made references to Moses and Jonah. If anyone has any idea of the title of this piece and if it can be found, I would appreciate it on behalf of this woman. She said that she thought it was sung here about 40 years ago. I've been here for five weeks [email protected]

Hi Reverend,

I believe this is what you are looking for:

The Hornet Song

When the Canaanites hardened their hearts against God,
And grieved Him because of their sin,
God sent along hornets to bring them to terms,
And to help His own people to win.

If a nest of live hornets were brought to this room,
And the creatures allowed to go free,
You would not need urging to make yourself scarce,
You'd want to get out, don't you see!

They would not lay hold and by force of their strength,
Throw you out of the window, oh, no!
They would not compel you to go against your will,
But they would just make you willing to go.

When Jonah was sent to the work of the Lord,
The outlook was not very bright.
He never had done such a hard thing before,
So he backed and ran off from the fight.

Now, the Lord sent a great fish to swallow him up,
The story I am sure you all know.
God did not compel him to go against his will,
But He just made him willing to go.

Chorus
God does not compel us to go, oh, no!
He never compels us to go.
God does not compel us to go against our will,
But He just makes us willing to go.

God bless!
Steve

When I was first saved back in late 60's our local Moody radio station played this song sung by two evangelists. I believe they were from southern Illinois. One last name I remember was Levine I think? This song made an impact on me at the time since I was such a young Christian and a musician. I still use that saying they sang about in my teaching even to this day. It's a wonderful illustration. I say it like I remember them saying it. "God is like a room full of hornets, He doesn't make you go against your will, He just makes you willing to go". I went to hear one of the evangelist in person at a men's retreat given by our church both sing and give a sermon to us. I have never forgotten the impact the song and the evagelist had on my as a young man. God is good.

There are several more verses to this song. Could you post them as well? my email: [email protected]. I so enjoyed this song when I was a teenager. My parents used it as the end of a message on becoming missionaries.

Chorus 1
He does not compel us to go (no no)
He does not compel us to go
He does not compel us to go
'Gainst our will
But He just makes us willing to go

Verse 1
When the Canaanites hardened
Their hearts against God
And grieved Him because of their sin
God sent along hornets to bring them to time
And to help His own people to win
The hornets persuaded them that it was best
To go quickley and not to go slow
God did not compel them to go
'Gainst their will
But He just made them willing to go

Verse 2
If a nest of live hornets
Were brought to this room
And the creatures allowed to go free
You would not need urging
To make yourself scarce
You'd want to get out don't you see
They would not lay hold
And by force of their strength
Throw you out of the window oh no
They would compel you
To 'gainst your will
But they'd just make you willing to go

Verse 3
When Jonah was sent
To the work of the Lord
The outlook was not very bright
He never had done such
A hard thing before
He never had done
Such a hard thing before
So He backed and ran off from the fight
But God sent a big fish to swallow Him up
The story I'm sure you all know
He did not compel Him to go 'gainst His will
But He just made Him willing to go

Verse 4
When Moses was sent to lead Israel out
To canaan's rich fruit bearing land
Resisting His Spirit they worshipped a calf
And refused to obey God's command
God did not compel them to go to the land
Which with wine milk and honey did flow
But fed them on manna for forty long years
Till He got them all ready to go

Verse 5
When Balaam was sent to the moabite King
And wanted things run His own way
His mule ever faithful
Spoke at the right time
Made Him willing God's voice to obey
God can use any man
Since He used Balaam's mule
For He is Almighty you know
He does not compel us
To go 'gainst our will
But He just makes us willing to go

Paul Livene and Paul Findlay the Evangelist and Blind Singer came to Byron on a regular basis. Often they were in our home when I was a young boy. Precious memories how they linger, [email protected]
