Post by nell » Mon May 01, 2006 3:25 am

I need the words to this song.

There has never been a friend like Jesus
There has never been a friend so true

We walk hand in hand, through this pilgrim land

Hymn Lyrics Needed - There has never been a friend like Jesus

There has never been a friend like Jesus,

I have never found a friend so true;

When I weaken and my steps grow wayward,

Then He comes to me with strength anew.

Chorus 2x
We walk hand in hand through this pilgrim land

Here we linger for a day; but soon we'll leave

this land of night for that land so bright

There my friend and I will stay.

Let me recommend this friend so faithful, He will

Understand your deepest need; For He walked this

Lonely path before us, and He's able ev'ry step to lead.

Thank you Nell for requesting this song. I, too, have been searching for the complete lyrics for many years. I love it as it was sung by Jim Roberts and Norma Zimmerman (?) years ago formerly of the Lawrence Welk Show. Mr. Robert is no longer with us, having died of cancer years ago. But I also love hearing Diane Sussek sing it in later days. It would be lovely to know the lyricists though. Finally, thank you unknown "guest" for hearing our hearts and providing the lyrics in April. I'm writing this reply on July 13, 2010 and find it interesting that you provided the lyrics on my Dad's birth date in April. He is no longer with me and my twin sister having passed in 1961. My sweet wife used to sing this when we met back in 1978. Her voice was so beautiful and strong. She passed in 2002 of leukemia and just about every day I think of her singing this song.

i am so happy to have found the correct lyrics; i would love to have the score, but i can write it for our musicians. it has such a deep meaning not only through life as we live it each day, but in the '4th quarter' of life, it has a special meaning to me. thanks

Does anyone have a recording of this song so it can be put on YouTube?

I checked, but could not find it. Thanks for the words, by the way!

Beautiful song.

I used to have a tape recording by a trio called the Lewis Sisters from the late '70's. They were from the First Baptist Church in Hammond, Indiana, back in the good ol' days.

The song title is "My Friend and I" written by Ralph Carmichael

Here is one link I found https://hymnary.org/text/there_has_neve ... like_jesus

This site shows it was published in 2 books
Favorites Number 7 Page 17 [Favorites was one of a series of gospel music books published by Singspiration, Inc beginning in the 1950's]
The New Church Hymnal Page 68 [The New Church Hymnal (as opposed to The Church Hymnal - different book and publisher) was published in 1976 by the Lexicon Music, associated with Ralph Carmichael.

I believe somewhere in storage I have both books
