there's one that I am looking for as well....some of the lyrics go like this

Love love like this was never known
Love love like this was never shown
For God gave His only Son to die all alone

And the greatest love letter that ever was written
was signed on an old rugged cross...

This song was sang at the church that I was brought up in but the people that sang it there are gone now...

is this the same song that you are looking for?

I hope this is what you're looking for
World's Greatest Love Letter

There's been many, many letters
Written by many great men
Letters of honor, valor and mercy
Great deeds of many of them
Some were written on parchment
And penned down with ink laced in gold
But the world's greatest letter
Was written by Jesus in blood

Chorus
Love, love like this was never known
Love, love like this was never shown
For God sent His only son to die for the lost
And the world's greatest letter
Was sent from the old rugged cross

They beat Him, they mocked Him
And they spat in His face
Up a dark lonely mountain
He hung there in shame and disgrace
They pierced His side
Drove nails in His hands and His feet
He prayed "Father forgive them"
The same words He's pleading tonight

Chorus x 2
Tag
And the world's greatest letter
Was sent from the old rugged cross

Maybe this is it? I haven't heard it sonce somewhere in the early 80's. I believe my brother has an old album with it on it.
1.
I was going through some memories and treasures today,
Found your love letters I had hidden away,
There was tender emotion with each stroke of the pen,
I opened the letters and read them again.

Cho.
And remember I love you,
With the love I have loved you.
I'd like to claim you and name you my own.
Remember I love you,
With the love I have loved you.
When you doubt that I do,
Count the tears scattered through.
My love letters to you.

2.
By the light of the candle I picked up my pen,
Words don't come easy,
So where do I begin?
I hope I've not waited too long to reply.
Oh Angels bear my letter to my love in the sky.

Edit*

what I listed as second verse is third I think, Sorry I am going from memory and I was somewhere around 13 last time I heard it.
the second would go:

I counted the gifts you had given so free.
You never stopped giving with no word from me.
They were wrapped in silk ribbons
with notes marked in red.
I turned through the pages and here's what you said.
