Descant lyrics for Silent Night

Post by Guest » Tue Dec 28, 2010 1:29 pm

"neath the silent stars a town is sleeping (silent night)
shepherds on the hills they are a leaping (holy night)
the flocks are safe within the fold (all is calm)
secure from rain and pain and cold (all is bright)

round yon virgin mother and child
(silent, si-lent ni-ght)
holy infant so tender and mild
(holy, ho-ly ni-ght)
sleep in heavenly peace
(sleep in peace)
sleep in heavenly peace
(sleep in heavenly peace, in peace)

I not only remember the words but the melody and every year it drives me crazy trying to find the source for the descant. I would have been in the 5th or 6th grade, I believe, when I learned it ... 1959-60. I've written it out on staff paper and almost used it this Christmas at our church. Next year for certain, if I can nail down the composer.

'Neath the silent stars the town is sleeping
Shepherds in the hills their watching are keeping
Their flocks are safe within the fold
Secure from danger want or cold
Silent, Silent night
Holy, holy night
Sleep in peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
In peace

I never knew there was a second verse!

Dec 5 2010 remembers it the way we sang it in my fifth/sixth grade choir at school for the Christmas program with Mrs. Arensen, circa 1970. We also sang Silent Night in German.

Through the silent night, the town is sleeping,
The sheep are safe within the fold,
They're free from danger fear and cold,
Silent...silent night
Holy..holy night
Sleep in peace, si-lent, ho-ly night,
Sleep in peace.

'Neath the starry skies, a child is sleeping
Safely in his mothers arms, protecting him from hurt and harm
Silent, silent night
Holy, holy night
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep, peace.

Dear All, This must be THE MYSTERY CAROL. I have a notated version but still no composer to credit. I'm happy to send it electronically, have used it many many
times and hope someday to meet the person who wrote it. I will be very grateful.
Not exactly sure how to share this info...
Blessings. Kate

Kate, I would love to have a copy of the notated version.
Would you email to me at: [email protected].
I also sang this in elementary school, and it haunts me every year.
I'm determined to find it this year! Thanks, Lauren

Boy does this bring back memories, and I was just talking to someone about doing this for my mother's church! Were there only 2 vr. or 3? I recall the tune (Mrs. Cookie was a stickler for memorizing and insisted I sing it back in CA for christmas mass ~ solo!) does bring back memories!
