I love this song and also love to play it. God bless!

Little Wooden Church On The Hill

Verse: 1
It was in, my childhood, many years ago,
with the spirit of the Savior, I was filled,
at an old fashion meeting, my memory lingers still,
in that little old wooden church, way out on the hill.

Chorus:
You could hear the people singing, about a half a mile away,
and your heart begins to get that sudden thrill,
it would start your body moving, till you couldn't keep it still,
in that little old wooden church out on the hill.

Verse: 2
Every Sunday morning, we had our family prayer,
then into that country wagon we would be,
then we'd start out on our journey, over rocks and over reels,
to that little old wooden church way out on the hill.

Verse: 3
Many folk have passed us, and many folk have gone,
but that sweet old golden memory lingers still,
I'm gonna keep that holy spirit, till death my body chills,
I got it in that wooden church, out on that hill.

my nannie loves this song and sings it to me often!
the only thing is ..you forgot a verse...

THEN WHEN THAT OLD FASHIONED PREACHER
GAVE OUT A METERED HYMN
THE CROWD WITH THE HOLY GHOST WAS FILLED
PEOPLE WOULD BE SHOUTING
THANK GOD I CAN HEAR THEM STILL
IN THAT LITTLE WOODEN CHURCH WAY OUT ON THE HILL

i hope you teach this song to a loved one of yours...
that's how i learned so much...from the elders!!

Growing up, my father used to sing that song nearly every Sunday. It's funny how old gospel tunes like that were passed down tverbally and seem to change depending on the circles in which they're sung. My dad used to sing verses 1 & 2, as well as the verse posted Sept. 14 about the Old fashioned preacher. I've never heard of verse 3. Instead he used to sing a verse that neither of you mentioned:

Well there were no fine dressed people
just plain folk everywhere.
With them plain ole fashioned ruffles, frocks and frills.
They had no form or fashion.
Just plain ole spirit filled.
In that little wooden church on the hill.

I love this song by Vestal. Vestal never sings a bad song just some of them better than others!

when we song this years ago there was another verse we song

And in that old country graveyard, I got a mother buried there
Oh the prayer she prayed for me, lingers still
She prayed that I would find Jesus
If it be thine Holy Will
In that little old Wooden Church, way out on a hill

Thanks to all who contributed these words. My mother used to sing this song to me as well when I was a child. Funny, she's been gone now for 32 years, and this song is still embedded in my heart.
