I'm looking for the lyrics to a hymn that begins "O Loving God" and is sung to the tune Londonderry Air ("Danny Boy"). My friend encountered it at a funeral and wants it sung at her own funeral, but she doesn't know in what hymnal it was published. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I just found it in an OCP publication entitled Breaking Bread 2007. It is number 666 and I believe the lyrics are by Paulette McCoy.

I know "O Loving God" is Hymn No. 699 in the Catholic Hymnal. Strange I just found the hymn myself for the very same reasons you describe. My mother used to sing Oh Danny Boy to my brother, Dannny, when he was little. I just sent him the lyrics and suggested he use it for his funeral some day. The lyrics are, in fact by Paulette McCoy, but the hymn number is 699 as I noted.

I too first heard it at our friend's funeral, a Catholic Mass, and was so moved by it that I'd like to have it done at my own funeral in place of "Song of the Angels" that is usually played in our parish.

Here are the words:
O loving Lord, who art forever seeking
Those of thy mind, intent to do thy will,
Strong in thy strength, thy power and grace bespeaking,
Faithful to thee, through good report and ill -

To thee we come, and humbly make confession,
Faithless so oft, in thought and word and deed,
Asking that we may have, in true possession,
Thy free forgiveness in the hour of need.

In duties small be thou our inspiration,
In large affairs endue us with thy might;
Through faithful service cometh full salvation;
So may we serve, thy will our chief delight.

Not disobedient to the heavenly vision,
Faithful in all things, seeking not reward;
Then, following thee, may we fulfil our mission,
True to ourselves, our neighbours, and our Lord.

O Loving God, set to the melody of Londonderry Air, is in Glory & Praise, Third Edition by OCP and in the 2016 Heritage Missal by the same company. The words are different than posted above.

O loving God, we send your daughter (son) home to you.....

O loving God (to the tune of Londonderry Air or "Danny Boy")

Vs. 1
O loving God, we send our daughter(son) home to you,
home to a place of everlasting love,
to join there with the angel choirs and blessed saints,
and to behold your glorious holy face.

Chorus:
Receive her/his soul and let eternal light shine,
eternal light forever on her/his soul,
so she/he may be forever in your dwelling place,
and be at rest in peace until we meet her/him there

Vs. 2
O loving God, have mercy and forgiveness
Upon your servant's now departed soul,
And may your grace and love enfold her/him evermore,
So she/he may dwell in paradise at last.

Chorus:
Receive her/his soul and let eternal light shine,
eternal light forever on her/his soul,
so she/he may be forever in your dwelling place,
and be at rest in peace until we meet her/him there
