Hi,
I am looking for a old christian song. I am not too sure of the name but words are some like this "A messenger came this morning with a letter in his hand, he smiled and said this is for you so i took it from his hand....... ... and as i turned the page over....... it was signed sincerely Jesus".

I only have bits and pieces of the song in my mind, please help me to get the lyrics.

God bless!

Thanks,

Hi, I have been looking for this song for a while too. I heard it along time ago in New Zealand. As far as I can remember:

A messenger came this morning, with a letter in his hand
He smiled and said this is for you, so I took it from the man
I had a familiar feeling, he was someone I once knew
I started to invite him in a while, but I had other things to do...

It started out beloved, it has been a long long time
Since we have shared together, though you've long been on my mind
I'd like to spend some time with you, both today and forevermore
But I won't force my love on you, you must open up the door

There was a time, do you recall, a happy life we knew
Did you forget my promises do you know that they're still true ....

Do you realize where you are today, so far away from home?
It takes courage to come back, to admit that you were wrong
I'm not trying to embarrass you, or even make you cry
I just want you to understand, my love will never die
Call my name and I'll be there to comfort you again
Let me be your lover, let me be your friend

And as I turned the letter over, I slowly hung my head
Cause it was signed sincerely Jesus
And that was how the letter read ....

May not be perfect but pretty close to it I think.
Why is this song so obscure, it was brilliant!

This song is from Karen Lafferty... I've heard it 30 years ago... I can't translate in french the last sentance "That's how the letter read", but I understand the idea, and I appreciate Karen Lafferty's songs which "seek ye first the kingdom of God" is, I think, the most famous...

WOW!!!! I've been looking high and low for this song!!! I hears it years ago when I was only a little girl (about 7 years old) and I never forgot the melody. Although some of the words were a blur. Thanks so much for posting the lyrics!! You are such a blessing!!!!!!

Karen Lafferty has this song available on her Sweet Communion album that is available on CD on her website. I got it for my mother and I and we love having it back again!

My brother remembered this song today and we searched for the song online. Here are the lyrics as we remember them. (a verse was missing above and there are other minor differences.)

A messenger came this morning, with a letter in his hand
He smiled and said this is for you, so I took it from the man
I had a familiar feeling, he was someone I once knew
I started to invite him in a while, but I had other things to do...

The envelope said, "To one I love"
Who could send a love note to me
So I paused a while a while to read it
cause I wondered who it could be

It started out beloved, it has been a long long time
Since we have shared together, though you've long been on my mind
I'd like to spend some time with you, today and forevermore
But I won't force my love on you, you must open up the door

There was a time, do you recall, the happiness we knew
Did you forget my promises do you know that they're still true ....

Do you realize where you are today, so far away from home?
It takes courage to come back, admit that you were wrong
I'm not trying to embarrass you, or even make you cry
I just want you to understand, my love will never die, ohhhh
Call my name and I'll be there to comfort you again
Let me be your lover, let me be your friend

And as I turned the letter over, I slowly hung my head
Cause it was signed sincerely Jesus
And that was how the letter read ....

I know the song from 30 years ago as well. I have a live recording of it.
