Got Any River's??

Post by Guest » Thu May 28, 2009 2:44 am

Rev. N.E. McCoy from Jamestown, North Dakota use this song on his radio program on KSJB for more then 50 years starting in the late 30's. It is a song written by someone who knew the difficutties of building a railroad. It has to do with building bridges over rivers and tunneling through mountains. He learned it while he was a young Salvation Army Officer. He never sang any verses, everyone who lived in my home town during his time knew the song.

I remember my mom singing GOD SPECIALIZES in church and the pianist would hand motion the "senior" choir to stand as she was nearing the end of the 2nd verse. It was song slow ly with feeling followed by an up beat tempo for the chorus. The lyrics that I recall along with the sheet music:
Have you any rivers that you think are uncrossable?
Have you any mountains that you can not tunnel through?
God specializes in things that are impossible
And He will do what not other power can do.

Have you any afflictions that you think are incurable?
In spite of what the doctors can do
God specializes in things thought impossible
He can do what no other power can do.

Also, Gene Viale has been singing this version for an extended period of gospel time.

My mother was the church pianist and she used to sing this song as a soloist. It was soul stirring. She also sang "God is still on the throne" "Let God Abide" "King Jesus will Roll all Burdens away" and "He knows how much we can bear" These are a just a few of the songs she would sing before the pastor would deliver the message.

God specializes and He will do what no other pow'r can do
Have you any rivers that you think are uncrossable?
Have you any mountains that you can't tunnel thru?
God specializes-------in things thought impossible
And He will do what no other pow'r can do.

Have you afflictions that seem to be incurable
In spite of all the doctors can do?
God specializes in healing afflictions;
If you trust HIm He'll do what no other doctor can do.

God specializes----God Specializes
If your body filled with disease and your medicine don't give you ease
If there's troubles in your home and your enemies won't leave you alone
If you're friendless and in despair when nobody seem to care I know
God specializes, God Specializes, God specializes, God specializes, I tell you God specializes, God specializes and He will do what no other pow'r can do

have you any rivers you think are uncrossable,
have you any mountain you can't tunnel through,
God specializes in things thought impossible,
for he can do what no other friend can do.

Jesus never fails, Jesus never fails
heaven and earth shall pass away
but Jesus never fail.

The last line as I've always sung it is, "He can do just what no other can do".

Amazing to see the story behind such a touching song.

I love this hymn so much and it is wonderful to see how much it means to others. When my grand-children seem troubled I want them to learn this and keep it in their hearts as it has been in mine for over 70 years-Heather Butler, Australia

this song was originally a song of the American builders of the Panama canal.

Got any rivers they say are uncrossable,
Got any mountains they say 'can't tunnel through'?
We specialize in the wholly impossible,
Doing the things they say you can't do.

published in 1914, and was "Christianized" by Eliason 1931.

Like many American hymns, its basically a drinking song that so many people knew, it was easy to transition it to the church.
