At a funeral in 1804 at Harvard college, students sang a hymn that included the words "Farewell, a sad, and long farewell." Need author, full title, date first written, etc. Any information much appreciated.

Hi Mary,

I believe the hymn was written or adapted by Samuel Holyoke, circa 1796.

You can find bibliographic information at this site:

The Hymn Tune Index

Just follow these steps:

Under "Text Search" section...
1) Keep the first drop-down as "HTI Text Code"
2) Keep the second drop-down as "starts with"
3) Enter "FASALF" in the text box.
4) Press "Search"

This will give you two different citations. Clicking through to the next screen will show you bibliographic information. You should be able to track down of the cited references in a theological school library.

Hope this provides you enough information to get started. Good luck!

Thanks,
Steve
