A crown of thorns the Savior wore

Post by Dayton diva » Sat Apr 04, 2015 5:11 am

I am trying to find the music and lyrics to a Methodist hymn we used to sing at Easter. It was about a garden that contained roses. One day children troop by, tearing the roses,up and binding the roses into their hair. Jesus comes by and says that the roses bloom but soon die. Then the children place the thorny twigs on his head and then look and see him with the crown of thorns and stop laughing.

It contained these lyrics but I do not remember all of them:

First the song describes a garden

"in which some lovely roses grew
of finest thorn and reddest hue"

Then
"Some children gaily trooped that way"
I forget the next few lines ...

"Bind up your hair with roses red!
this rudely and in scorn they said
Then Jesus humbly made reply
These roses bloom but soon they die
Then upon his blessed head
The thorny twigs they placed instead
The children looked and laughed no more
A crown of thorns the Savior wore"

Thank you for your help in advance.

The melody is a tune called “Legende,” by Tchaikovsky. My choir is rehearsing it now but with different lyrics (the same story, though). The tune is also called “Crown of Roses.” I remember singing the lyrics you have recorded when I was a teen, many decades ago. Thanks for posting.
