The Meetin'

Post by Randy Kelso » Mon Apr 19, 2010 1:59 am

Here's all I can remember:

They Traveled Over Cobblestone Roads In Their Buckboard Wagon
Boys in their overhauls, girls in their gingham dresses
With the Good Lord on their minds
A song in their hearts
A prayer on their lips
???
They journeyed

They only had one thought in mind
Soon they'd leave their cares behind
Lay down their heavy loads
At the meetin'

They travelled down cobblestone roads on their buckboard wagons.
Boys in their overalls girls in their gingham dresses.
With the good Lord on their mind, a prayer in their hearts,
a praise on their lips, they journeyed.
They only had one thought in mind,
soon they'd leave their cares behind.
Lay down their heavy loads at the meeting.

Coal oil lanterns scattered here and there.
A special kind of happiness - everywhere.
Lay down their heavy loads at the meeting.

The preacher did he preaching`.
???? -did the singing.
?????
Mom forgot about the quilt that she had to piece.
Daddy didn't seem to care that he had to reap the harvest.
They only had one thought in mind,
soon they'd leave their cares behind.
Lay down their heavy loads at the meeting.

Coal oil lanterns scattered here and there.
A special kind of happiness - everywhere.
Lay down their heavy loads at the meeting.

Reverend Brown did the preachin'
Uncle John led the prayin'
Sally would direct the choir, Mary Tom led the singing
Ma forgot about the quilt that she had to piece.
Daddy didn't seem to care that he had to reap the harvest.

other themes/lines include:

pot-bellied stove that would send out a glow once you entered the door?
homemade benches and splintered floors
a bucket of cool spring water
pitchers made from gourds

They traveled over cobblestone roads in their buckboard wagons.
Boys in their overalls, girls in their gingham dresses.
With the good Lord on their mind, a prayer in their hearts,
a praise on their lips, and a song in their soul (?) they journeyed.
They only had one goal in mind,
soon they'd leave their cares behind.
Lay down their heavy loads at the meeting.

Reverend Brown did the preachin'
Uncle John led the prayin'
Sally would direct the choir, Mary Tom led the singing
Ma forgot about the quilt that she had to piece.
And daddy didn't seem to care that he had to reap the harvest.
They only had one goal in mind,
soon they'd leave their cares behind.
Lay down their heavy loads at the meeting.

In a little white church with a rusty old bell,
and a pot bellied stove set all aglow when you came through the door
Home made benches and splinter floors,
a bucket of cool spring water, dipper made from gourd.
Coal oil lanterns scattered here and there.
A special kind of happiness everywhere.
Lay down their heavy loads at the meeting.
