I listen and I listen

Post by AnnetteDickman » Sat Jun 04, 2011 6:33 pm

I'm looking for the lyrics and music a piece of music that I am sure is a hymn. The first verse is;

In the morning early I go down to the sea and I see the mist upon the shore.

The chorus is;

I listen and I listen

Anybody got any clues? I'm sure it was in a modern day hymn book circa 1979ish.

Sound of the Sea by Hazel Charlton

In the morning early
I go down to the sea
And I see the mist on the shore;
I listen and I listen

When I go to the rocks
I go looking for shells
And I feel the sand beneath my feet;
I listen and I listen

When the stormy day comes
Waves crash on the cliffs
And the wind whistles through my hair;
I listen and I listen

And at night when I sleep
And the sea is calm
The gentle waves lap the shore;
I listen and I listen

I sometimes think that God
Is talking to me
When I hear the sound of the sea;
I listen and I listen

I've been searching for that song for years. I remember singing it at an all boys Junior school in the late 70s .
I can only remember the tune to the third line though!
We used to have a large thick flip chart type hymn book tied over the roof truss in the school hall and we'd sing from that.
I used to hate 'Give me oil in my lamp'.

Yes I remember singing this song at primary school around 1974. I remember the tune very well, the words less so. My granny loved it. I didn't know it was a hymn!

I have sung this song to myself over the years. I remember being at primary school in the 1970's singing this in assembly. This morning my teenage daughter asked me what it was called and in searching, I found this link. Hazel Charlton, 'thank you'.

Just seen this post, I sing this song lots from memory so having all the words will fill a few gaps. Great hymn, one of my all time favourites.
