IN THE ARMS OF AN ANGEL

Spend all your time waiting for that second chance
For the break that will make it ok
There's always some reason to feel “not good enough"
And it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction, oh beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins
They may be empty and weightless, and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of an Angel, fly away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of an Angel; may you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight line, and everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
The storm keeps on twisting, you keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack
It don't make no difference, escaping one last time
It's easier to believe
In this sweet madness, oh this glorious sadness
That brings me to my knees

In the arms of an Angel, far away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
In the arms of an Angel; may you find some comfort here

Hope this helps
God Bless Y'all

Sarah McLachlan said that she wrote this song following the death of Smashing Pumpkins keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin from a heroin overdose in 1996. She'd read about how many musicians were turning to heroin to deal with the pressures they faced in the music industry and how they ended up overdosing. While there's no indication that she ever did heroin, she did say that she felt many of the same pressures and could commiserate with those who went through this kind of suffering.

I know this is a hymn site, but despite containing the word "Angel", I wouldn't necessarily read too much into it theologically...I believe Sarah McLachlan is agnostic so this probably wasn't written with the afterlife in mind. I'm guessing that "Angel" was more of a metaphor for death or a release from suffering when she wrote it.

That said, the good Lord did bless her with an amazing voice and song writing skills, and I think the song "works" for those of us who do believe in a spiritual realm. There are countless stories of people who have found peace or inspiration from it. Here's one of them:
