Hi Guest,

Interesting...you're the second to ask about this hymn this week.

Here's a previous thread that discusses it. Hope this is what you're looking for:

Another Hill and Sometimes A mountain? Pls help

I heard this song last night for the first time in years. I love it, but had forgotten about it. The band who did it last night told me it was written by the late Don McGraw and the late Doug Wilson from our local area (Roanoke, VA). However I cannot verify that they were the writers.

Sometimes A Mountain

I'VE BEEN SCORNED BY A NEIGHBOR WHOM I TREASURED.
I'VE BEEN DECEIVED BY A FRIEND I HELD DEAR.
SO MANY TIMES I JUST WANTED TO GIVE UP.
THEN I REMEMBERED MY LORD IS RIGHT HERE.

CHORUS
ANOTHER HILL AND SOMETIMES THERE'S A MOUNTAIN.
ANOTHER ROAD WITH ROCKS TO HURT MY FEET.
BUT WHEN HE WALKS ALONG BESIDE ME.
I CAN TAKE IT THERE'LL BE NO RETREAT.

I HAVE QUESTIONED THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE.
I WANDERED WHY IT HAPPENED TO ME.
BUT THROUGH PRAYER I FOUND THE ANSWER.
IT WAS ALL QUITE PLAIN TO SEE.

SOMETIMES A MOUNTAIN

1. I've been scorned by a neighbor whom I treasured,
I've been deceived by a friend I held dear.
So many times I just wanted to give up,
Then I remembered my Lord is right here.

Cho:
Another hill and sometimes a mountain,
Another road with rocks to hurt my feet. But when He walks along beside me,
I can take it there'll be no retreat.

2. I have questioned the loss of a loved one,
I wondered why it happened to me.
But through prayer I have found the answer,
It was all quite plain to see.

Cho:
Another hill and sometimes a mountain,
Another road with rocks to hurt my feet. But when He walks along beside me,
I can take it there'll be no retreat.

3. I'm so glad that I've learned to trust Him,
His promise to me, He will keep.
I have no fear of tomorrow,
For the Shepherd takes good care of His sheep.

My grandmother actually wrote this song in the 1920’s.. My mother has the original copy that actually has another verse... My Grandparents made little song books that had a few of my Grandmothers songs in them.. They sold these to help their ministry grow... They were Evangelist that went accross was the South spreading the Gospel from the 1920’s through 1980’s...

Thanks for sharing the story BJBrant. It's amazing how we're still talking about your grandmother's song almost 100 years after she first wrote it and how it's continuing to touch new souls!

I'd love to hear more about that "missing verse", and also your grandparents' ministry. There's a lot we can learn from the "faith of our fathers (and mothers)".

Would love to know your grandmother's name BJ so she could be credited with the writing even though it would be in the public domain by now I suppose.

Did you ever live in Pryor, OK?

I made plans for myself and for others
Some thing I wanted so to do tomorrow
Disappointment turned out to be the harvest
Leaving me with a little more sorrow

This is a power song for the spirit when times are hard. It has seen me threw and is now as me and mine face uncertainty. Keep the faith.
