It's a pretty predictable set for me, even if I can't explain it or what they have in common. They're not even my favorite hymns; I love This Is My Father's World and Crown Him with Many Crowns more, but could sing them all day without a tear. But for some reason these ones get me:
I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry
Lift Every Voice and Sing
Lord of the Dance
Amazing Grace (last verse only)
I'm worse than I thought; just typing out the titles got me sniffly.
How about you?
Hymns you can't get through without crying

Thanks for starting this thread, yeropil8
Would love to hear what others come up with.
These are the first that come to mind when I think of hymns that get me teary-eyed:
- I Know Who Holds Tomorrow
- Because He Lives
- His Eye Is On the Sparrow
- He Hideth My Soul
I think what these all have in common is that when I find myself in the darkest times of life, these hymns always seem to provide comfort and hope and reassurance. These hymns have been like an old friend to remind me that God is with me even though I can't even see anything in front of me.

Re: Hymns you can't get through without crying
Any hymn regarding Salvation and the Cross is the common theme for me
At Calvary
In Christ Alone
Because He Lives
Victory In Jesus -
( Particularly the lines
“And then I cried dear Jesus come and heal my broken spirit.
And somehow Jesus came to me and brought the Victory” )

“I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone (by Mahalia Jackson)” make me cry almost every time I hear them.
“God On The Mountain”, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “Reach Out And Touch The Lord” are some more good ones that get me get teary-eyed.
