Need Words To An Old Song - Children go where I send You

Post by glenda178 » Tue Jan 08, 2008 4:03 am

I'm told it is an old CHRISTmas song, but I heard it for the first time at a singing last night. I think it is called "Children go where I send You" or something like that. It is kind of a progressive song like the 12 days. It goes up to 8 things. The first is "a baby born" and 2nd "is Paul and Silas".

Go Where I Send Thee
------Kingston Trio

Dave Guard/Bob Shane/Nick Reynolds

Children, go where I send thee.
How shall, How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna send thee one by one,
one for the little bitty Baby,
the baby boy,
born in Bethlehem.

Children, go where I send thee.
How shall, How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna two by two,
two for Paul and Silas,
One for the little bitty Baby,
the baby boy,
born in Bethlehem.

Children, go where I send thee.
How shall, How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna three by three,
three for the Hebrew children,
two for Paul and Silas,
One for the little bitty Baby,
the baby boy,
born in Bethlehem.

Children, go where I send thee.
How shall, How shall I send thee?

Here is a slightly different version. There seems to be several versions.

Children, Go Where I Send Thee

Children, go where I send thee,
How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna send thee one by one
One for the little bitty - baby
born, born, born in Bethlehem.

Children, go where I send thee,
How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna send thee two by two
Two for Paul and - Silas
One for the little bitty - baby
born, born, born in Bethlehem.

(Repeat in decending order :)

Three for the Hebrew children...

Four for the four that stood at the door...

Five for the gospel preachers...

Six for the six that never got fixed...

Seven for the seven that never got to heaven...

Eight for the eight that stood at the gate...

Nine for the nine all dressed so fine...

Ten for the ten commandments...

Eleven for the eleven deriders...

Twelve for the twelve Apostles...

Thanks sooooooo much! The second, shorter version is the one that I heard the other night. That's the one I want to do. There are 4 of us at church who have been playing around with a little harmony.......I call us the harmony gang. We had a little "in house" singing back in October and we did 3 songs and everyone loved us. I'm always looking for songs I think we can do. We give it a try and if we can't get good harmony we just thro it out or we do it in the choir if we really like the song. God Bless!!

Need Words To An Old Song - Children go where I send You

my grandmother is almost 80 years old and this is her favorite song to sing during the holidays. I've been trying to find her version of the song. Its pretty mush like this one but the first verse is slightly different. She can never remember past 4 or 5 by 5, and I'm not sure if her version ends with different llyrics as well. Any help with finding her version from childhood would be greatly appreciate....her first verse:

Children go where I send thee
How shall I send thee
Im gonna send the 1 by 1
1 was the little bitty baby,
Born by the virgin of Mary,
Wrapped in a swaddlin' clothin',
Laid in in the heavenly manger,
Baby born, born in Bethlehem.

Here is my favorite recording of the song, sung by Dionne Warwick. It is from one of her appearances on “The Carol Burnett Show”
