1 Would you walk by on the other side
When someone called for aid?
Would you walk by on the other side
And would you be afraid?
Cross over the road my friend,
Ask the lord his strength to lend,
His compassion has no end -
Cross over the road.

2 Would you walk by on the other side
When you saw a loved one stray?
Would you walk by on the other side
Or would you watch and pray?
Cross over the road"¦

3 Would you walk by on the other side
When starving children cried?
Would you walk by on the other side
And would you not provide?
Cross over the road"¦

I can't track down who wrote it, though.

It was a regular in our school assembly and it always made me feel a bit emotional. I've never forgotten it and it is really a beautiful song.

The writer, Pamela Verrall taught music at Aldershot County High (later Aldershot Manor) in the 60s and 70s. She wrote a number of hymns, which were collected in a book. This was her best I believe.

A characteristic of her piano playing was a deal of vamping with the left hand.

I was at Aldershot County high school when Mrs Pam Verrall wrote this hymn and in the school choir when we sang it at Aldershot Methodist Church for an episode of a bbc radio program that I can't remember the name of! Mrs Verrall was a lovely lady God Rest. Sandra Kay nee Clements
