My Mum has asked me to do the order of service for my Dad's funeral and has told me the first line of the hymn she wants is "Make me a shadow of your peace". I have not been able to track it down so far so would be very grateful for any assistance.

Many thanks

I think the hymn you are looking for is "Make Me a Channel of Your Peace".

Hi Stuffney,

I think Guest is right (Thanks Guest!) I believe some older versions use the word "shadow", but the word "channel" seems to be the more used today.

The words are by St. Francis of Assisi. The hymn was actually sung at Diana, Princess of Wales' funeral. You can find the lyrics here:

http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/page258.asp

1.
Make me a channel of your peace:
where there is hatred let me bring your love,
where there is injury, your pardon, Lord,
and where there's doubt, true faith in you:

2.
O Master grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved, as to love with all my soul!

3.
Make me a channel of your peace:
where there's despair in life let me bring hope,
where there is darkness, only light,
and where there's sadness, ever joy:

4.
Make me a channel of your peace:
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving of ourselves that we receive,
and in dying that we're born to eternal life.

5.
Make me a channel of your peace:
where there is hatred let me bring your love,
where there is injury, your pardon, Lord,
and where there's doubt, true faith in you.

Hope it helps. My prayers and my best wishes go out to you and your family in this difficult time.

God bless,
Steve

This hymn is beautiful, a young guy in my town has committed suicide. On the outside he seemed to have it all, great personality, star football player, handsome, academic achievement while attending the prestigious Wharton school at Penn University, yet he didn't have happiness with himself. It is a heartbreaking story that has stunned many people. Although he had been battling depression for a while, no one could tell that it could get this severe. I hardly knew the kid, but it still is very upseting. Anyway I think this hymn is a wonderful song for a funeral, it tells of how maybe this kid is at peace now, free from all the pressure.

We sang "Hymn of Promise" at my cousins funeral last September. He was only 10 years old, and died of cancer, and it was a beautiful and appropriate and hopeful song to sing, and was one of the most moving parts of the service. I'd recommend it for any funeral.
