Hi, Niki! I know the great song you are talking about, and I have it on a mixtape from back in 1990, so it's probably from the '80s. A friend in Texas told me that it is by Wendy Bagwell & the Sunliters, however, I haven't found anything in their discography to confirm that, and I can't find it on YouTube either. Have you found out any more about it since you made this post 7 years ago??

(don't remember the very first part). for down the road I see a soul, it's a sinner comin home. Come on, lets go to meet him and welcome him back home. and tell him how we missed him and prayed for his return. (somethin like this)

Shout Hallelujah, a soul has been redeemed. Shout Hallelujah, a sinner has come home. Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. That reached for one lost fallen soul that now has been set free. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hal le lu jah!

I see my Father standing with outstretched arms to meet, sayin bring the robe, the rings, put shoes upon his feet. Go kill the fatted calf you find and rejoice along with me. My son who once was lost is found, was blind but now can see.
