I remember Sherman Branch. The best I can remember, he and my daddy worked in a cotton mill together, and it was my impression that Daddy might have been the first to hear the song (as they worked). Both Sherman and Daddy liked writing songs, as I remember. I wish Daddy had gotten some of his songs published. Back to Sherman, I guess, Sherman Sr. He was a good man and such a blessing to everyone he came in contact with.

I heard a different version to this back in 1964.

There have been many misconceptions about the writing of this song. One is that my dad actually had this dream. That is not true. Neitheris it true, as it has been stated, that he was a bootlegger. My dad quit school in the sixth grade, he began drinking at age 14 and continued to do so until November 19, 1950, when, at a revival, in Lowell, NC, He surrendered his life to Christ

This is a wonderful and true song about the fate of our unsaved family and friends. It clearly shows how they can get themselves out of this fatal condition.

May God Bless the man who wrote this most important message in a beautiful song.

To the family of Mr. Branch, we'd love to hear any stories you have about this great song and the man who wrote it! :)

Thanks,

To Sherman: I heard that this was true. That the man who wrote the song actually had a dream about it. Since it was your Dad that wrote it, can you tell me if that is what really happened? Thanks
