I know this is may be years too late but the name of the song is "The Hallelujah Chorus". I grew up in an African Methodist Episcopal Church and we used to sing this all the time.

I didn't have time for details on my first post. As stated, I have a patient who sings this song. We are located in north central Alabama, and she is 90 years old. Next time I visit I will record and make available. Like these others, she knows the song, but doesn't know the name of the hymn. thanks, john

It apppears that the folks here at NameThatHymn are going to be stumped. Can anybody suggest another forum where experts on older gospel music might be found?

I would count it as progress even if all that I can learn now is a title for the hymn.

Thanks for posting the request Jerm. Jerm is helping me track down the music for a very old gospel song for my mother, who is in her 90's. She is now quite blind, and singing is one of the few pleasures left to her. We don't know the name to the song but we do know the words to the first verse approximately (given below). The song has a feel that suggests that it came from the Southern Appalachian tradition (mom is from Alabama). It is very old, and could even have been written in the old shaped not notation. Here are the words for the first verse:

There is a blessed anthem
God put in me to stay.
This world know nothing like it,
It sweeter grows each day.
It rises o're the mountain,
It's deeper than the sea.
This holy, happy chorus,
Salvation put in me.
I don't know what to call it,
Blessed beyond compare.
This chorus, Hallelujah,
Ringing in my soul.
No language ever spoken
Has to me my joy portrayed.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
Sweet Heaven's come to stay.
