Hi! Just looking for more info on this song, and noticed, while watching the start of a YouTube video by a trio, that they attributed the song to a "Rev. Dan Smith", and imply that it is a relatively recent song; more recent than the length of time I think I have known it for, actually. And my own church's self-published songbook calls it "Traditional. Public Domain."
[***Does anyone know its true origins?***]
Now, looking at the post here, I see that the CHORUS is ALMOST the same, (I think we sing "Come on in and TAKE the Bread of Life")
BUT these verses are not familiar at all.
The VERSES we sing at my church in Toronto ARE AS FOLLOWS:
Welcome, everybody!
Set [or sit] yourself right down.
You can come just as you are!
This is common ground.
Because... (CHORUS)
The bread represents His body.
The wine represents His blood.
If your heart is right within,
You can eat and drink in LOVE.
Because... (CHORUS)
I have God the Father.
I have God the Son.
I have God's Holy Spirit.
He is Three-in-One!
And... (CHORUS)
