(v1)
I've seen times when there hasn't been a bite on the table
Papa couldn't work ever since the war you know he hasn't been able
I've seen times when it would rain on a cloudless day
But I've never seen a time when momma didn't pray
(v2)
I worked these fields in the merciless sun till my skin was burning
I followed that mule and that old wooden plow till the furrows round me were turning
Late in the evening when the sun would go down at the end of the day
We'd all knell down by the bed and mama would pray
(ch)
Papa you raised me and momma you taught me right from wrong
I miss those Sunday's when you'd sing those old song
But most of all I remember when my daddy would say
"bow your heads kids, momma's gonna pray'
(v3)
Here I am now years have passed tears are in my eyes
I just got a call on the telephone they told me my mama was dying
Oh what I'd give if I could hear my daddy say
"Bow your heads kids, momma's gonna pray"
