Phillip awake I pray
Phillip awake I pray
I sang this once at Christmas in church. Two people sang it as though speaking to each other.. the first lines are the only ones I reacll...
( first person ) Phillip awake I pray
(second person ) Why waken me ?
(1st ) Listen to what I say
(2nd) Oh let me be
(1st ) Come with me out in the night see what a wonderous sight
(2nd) Darkness has turned to light, how can that be ?
That's all I recall. I would be very grateful if anyone could help. Thanks.

Phillip awake I pray
(1st) Now I hear music too
(2nd) I nothing hear
(1) Come, bring your pipe with you
(2nd) I have it here
(1st) Angles clear voices sing, news of great joy they bring, to us is born a King
(2nd) What tidings! Cheer/dear/...

Rare is last word I think.
Re: Phillip awake I pray
I've always loved this carol: it's in the BBC Singing Together Autumn Term 1979 booklet, which is generally available on EBAyGuest wrote: ↑Sat Dec 23, 2017 9:59 pmRare is last word I think.

I love this song too. I sang it as a duet at my primary school.
I've been searching for a long time today on Ebay.
I may be wrong but I think it might be from Singing Together Autumn 1972 and might be called The Two Shepherds. That would be consistent with the dialogue form of the lyrics.
If that is the right one, it is listed in Singing Together Autumn 1972 as "Two Shepherds - German Carol" and the credits say it's from the Faber Music publication Twenty European Carols.

The booklet for Singing Together has been sold on Ebay once or twice in recent times but I can't see an active listing for it.
If anyone finds the answer to what the song is called or the music or a recording, do please post what you find.

Born in a cattle-shed
How do you know
That's what the angel said
Oh, did he so
Pure is the maiden fair
Mary his mother dear
See, the star shines so clear
Come letter us go
