M.J. Cartwright, 19th and 20th Centuries.
The most likely person to have been the hymn-writer M.J. Cartwright was:

Miriah J. Cartwright, 1841-1926.
Born: November 25, 1841.
Died: August 18, 1926.
Buried: Union Cemetery, Butler County, Kentucky.

Mariah J. Cartwright was 59-years old at the time of the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, which showed her residing in
Butler County, Kentucky. (1)

Cartwright is known to have written the words for one hymn. Miriah J. Cartwright would have been about 48-years old
when the hymn was copyrighted.

The Old Ship Zion. © 1889 Daniel B. Towner. Music: Daniel Brink Towner, 1850-1919. In Daniel B. Towner and Chas.
M. Alexander. Revival Hymns, #122. (Chicago: The Bible Institute Colportage Association. 1905.) Later in The Ideal
Song and Hymn Book. Compiled by: D.B. Towner. (New York: Fleming H. Revell Company. 1909.)

Inserting the word 'of' into the phrase taken from the 1st line of stanza 2, this hymn's title has been changed to The
Old Ship of Zion. It also appeared under tilte of Ship Ahoy! in John Peterson and Harold DeCou. Sing Men!
Volume Four, #6. (Wheaton, Illinois: Singspiration. 1956.)

1) 1900 United States Federal Census.

Hello, I don't know if this is correct, but, during a search found this information.

M J Cartwright wrote "The Old Ship of Zion" around 1889 (exact date not known). It was played to a tune written by Daniel B Townes.

Hope it helps and also is correct.

ONLY GONE FROM OUR SIGHT
by Primitive Quartet

God calls loved ones home, yet our pain he can feel,
He always knows best, He can comfort and heal;
Remember my friend weeping lasts for the night,
We'll see them again, they're only gone from our sight.

Only gone from our sight to the beauties of heaven,
Only gone from our sight to a city so bright;
Where the flowers of God are blooming forever,
Keep looking beyond, they're only gone from our sight.

Our Lord went away; they heard his reply,
You will soon be indued with power from on high;
Sweet peace I will send to make burdens light,
He said, "Tarry here, I'm only gone from your sight".

Only gone from our sight to the beauties of Heaven,
Only gone from our sight to a city so bright;
Where the flowers of God are blooming forever,
Keep looking beyond, they're only gone from our sight.

Where the flowers of God are blooming forever,
Keep looking beyond, they're only gone from our sight.

I'M LOOKING BEYOND

I

I'M LOOKING BEYOND ...
THIS WORLD AND IT'S SORROW ...
TO THAT HAPPY LAND ...
TO WHICH I SHALL GO ...
BUT I HEARD A SWEET VOICE ...
SO SILENTLY WHISPER ...
BE FAITHFUL MY CHILD ...
UNTIL WE SHALL GO ...

II

SOMETIMES I AM SAD ...
I'M BLUE AND SO WEARY ...
MY TROUBLES AND FEARS ...
SEEM HEAVY TO BEAR ...
IT'S THEN I CAN KNEEL ...
IN SECRET START PRAYING ...
I KNOW THAT MY LORD ...
WILL MEET ME UP THERE ...

III

THE SAVIOR NOW STANDS ...
HE'S WAITING TO GREET YOU ...
WE SOON SHALL GO HOME ...
BE FAITHFUL AND TRUE ...
IT WILL NOT BE LONG ...
HE SILENTLY WHISPERS ...
KEEP LOOKING BEYOND ...
HE'S WAITING FOR YOU ...

CHORUS

I'M LOOKING BEYOND ...
THIS WORLD AND IT'S SORROW ...
THE SIGHTS OF THAT HOME ...
IT SEEMS I CAN SEE ...
I'M LOOKING BEYOND ...
TO HEAVEN'S TOMORROW ...
AND JESUS MY LORD ...
IS WAITING FOR ME ...

I am looking for the music to Ship Ahoy by M.J. Cartwright, Some of the words are: I was drifting away on life's pitiless sea, When the angry waves threatened my ruin to be. When away at my side there I dimly described, A stately old vessel and loudly I cried. Ship ahoy, Ship Ahoy, and loudly I cried Ship ahoy.
