lyrics needed for a song - Sorry I Never Knew You

Post by shannamj » Wed Aug 13, 2008 8:52 pm

I haven't heard this song since I was a little girl. I think the name of it is "Sorry I Never Knew You". It's about a man who dreams he goes to heaven, but Jesus casts him aside. If anyone has them I would greatly appreciate them.

lyrics needed for a song - Sorry I Never Knew You

Sorry, I Never Knew You

Last night as I lay sleeping a dream came to me.
I dreamed about the end of time, about eternity.
I saw a million sinners fall on their face and pray
The Lord just sadly looked at them and this I heard Him say:
Sorry, I never knew you, I have no record of your birth.
Sorry, I never knew you go serve the one that you served while on earth.

Well I thought that the time has surely come when I must face my trials
And I told the Lord that I had been a Christian all the while.
And through his book he took a look and sadly shook his head
He placed me over on the left and this is what he said:

Sorry, I never knew you, I have no record of your birth.
Sorry, I never knew you go serve the one that you served while on earth.

Well I saw my wife and children, I heard their loving voice.
They must have been so happy, O how they did rejoice.
Their robes of white around them, a crown upon their head.
My little girl looked up to me and this is what she said:

Daddy, we can't go with you, we must dwell in the joy of our Lord.
Sorry, but we still love you, but you'll never be our Daddy anymore.

And then I awakened, the tears were in my eyes
And looking all around me and there to my surprise
There was my wife and children, I knew it was a dream.
So kneeling at my bedside you should have heard me scream!

Father who art in Heaven, I know you gave your only Son.
Forgive me and let me serve thee, for I want to be ready when He comes.

Good morning and God bless. The words I have are a little different than the ones posted by starfish. The punctuation and capitalization are as they appear in a church hymnal.

Sorry, I Never Knew You
Sherman Branch Henkie M. Little Arr. by Jeffie Steele

Last night as I was sleeping, this dream came to me;
I dreamed about the end of time about eternity;
I saw a million sinners fall on their faces to pray,
The Savior sadly shook His head, and this I heard Him say;
Sorry, I never knew you, depart from me for ever more;
Sorry, I never knew you, Go and serve the one that you served before.

I thought the time had come when I must stand the trial,
I told the Lord that I had been a Christian all the while;
But thru the book He then looked, and sadly shook his head;
They placed me over on His left, and this is what he said;
Sorry, I never knew you, I find no record of your birth;
Sorry, I never knew you, Go and serve the one you served while on earth.

There was my wife and children, I heard each one's voice,
They must have all been happy, it seemed they did rejoice,
With robes of white around them, and crowns upon their head;
My little girl looked up at me, and this is what she said;
Daddy, we can't go with you, We must stay on this lovely shore;
Sorry, for we still love you, but you cannot be our Daddy any more.

When I from sleep awakened, with tears in my eyes,
I looked around and there about me. to my great surprise,
I saw my wife and babies, and knew I'd had a dream,
Then down beside my bed I fell, and for mercy did scream;
Father, who art in glory, In mercy look on me today
Forgive me let me serve Thee, Till the summons comes and calls me away.

lyrics needed for a song - Sorry I Never Knew You

This is a hymn from my childhood. All of these posts are close, but it appears that many have changed the wording to make it "rhyme".. the lyrics I post are the ORIGINAL Lyrics from Hymnal No.2 and if you read the composition and understand the meaning, you will see that all of the (thats, and wells, and thes and rhyming endings should never have been placed).. sorry, its a huge pet peeve of mine when people rewrite songs because they think it makes it sound better than the Original version. The only time the words should be changed, are when a female is singing this, then it can be changed to "I saw my HUSBAND and children".. Peace.

"Sorry I Never Knew You" aka "The Dream"

Last night as I lay sleeping a dream came to me.
I dreamed about the end of time, about eternity.
I saw a million sinners fall on their KNEES TO pray
The Lord just sadly SHOOK HIS HEAD and this I heard Him say:
Sorry, I never knew you, I have no record of your birth.
Sorry, I never knew you , go serve the one you served on earth.

I thought the time haD surely come when I must face my trials
And I told the Lord that I had been a Christian all the while.
And through his book he took a look and sadly shook his head
He placed me over to his left and this is what he said:

Sorry, I never knew you, I have no record of your birth.
Sorry, I never knew you go serve the one you served on earth.

I saw my wife and children, I heard their loving voice.
They must have been so happy, O how they did rejoice.
Their robes WERE WHITE around them, THEIR CROWNS upon their headS.
My little girl looked up @ me and this is what she said:

Daddy, we can't go with you, we must dwell in the GLORY of our Lord.
Sorry, but we still love you, you'll never be our Daddy anymore.

WHEN I HAD awakened, tears were in my eyes
looking all around me, there to my GREAT surprise
I SAW my wife and children, I knew it was a dream.
So kneeling at my bedside you should have heard me PRAY..

Father who art in Heaven, I know you gave your only Son.
Forgive me and let me serve YOU, I want to be ready when YOU come.

My opinion is if you are singing any one of these three different versions then you are doing good. It doesn't matter if it ryhmes or not as long as you have it in your heart. These days people are singing alot worse,with curse words in them and nasty messages for our children to listen to. This world needs cleaning up and if you want to sing the song politically correct or how you enjoy singing it,at least you are singing about the lord! It doesn't matter which way anyone else thinks you should sing it! Your on the right track!!! God Bless

My opinion is if a little girl is forced to sing this song to her father on the rare occasions he attends church it may lead to his suicide.
This song is absolutely horrendous.

Just in case... Here is the version I added to a karaoke soundtrac.

Last night as I lay sleeping
A dream appeared to me
I dreamed about the end of time
About eternity
I saw a million sinners
fall on their knees to pray
the Lord he sadly shook his head
and this I heard him say,
Sorry I never knew you
Depart from me forevermore.
Sorry I never knew you
Go and serve the one that you have served before.

I thought the time had fully come
That I must stand the trial.
I told the Lord that I had been
A Christian all the while
But through his book he took a look
and sadly shook his head
then placed me over on his left
and this I heard him say,
Sorry, I never knew you.
I find no record of your birth.
Sorry, I never knew you.
Go and serve the one that you served down on Earth.

There were my wife and children
I heard their loving voice
They must have been so happy
O how they did rejoice.
Their robes of white around them
their faces all aglow.
My little girl looked over at me
and this I heard her say,
Daddy, we can't go with you.
We must dwell in the joys of our Lord
Sorry, for we still love you
But you cannot be our Daddy anymore.

Now when I had awakened
The tears were in my eyes
And looking all around me
And there to my suprise
There were my loving babies
I knew it was a dream
And beside that bed of mine
You should have heard me scream
Father, Lord in Glory
I know thou gave thine only Son
Father, please forgive me
For I want to be ready when you come.

This is the version I had heard growing up:

Last night as I lay sleeping, a dream came to me;
I dreamed about the end of time, about eternity;
I saw a million sinners fall on their faces to pray,
The Savior sadly shook his head, and this I heard him say;
Sorry I never knew you, I find no record of your birth,
Sorry I never knew you, go and serve the one you served on earth.

There was my little family around Gods happy throne,
A robe of white around them and a crown upon their head;
They must have been so happy, oh how they did rejoice;
My little girl looked up at me and sadly she did say;
Sorry Mommy we can’t go with you, we must dwell in the presence of the Lord;
Sorry Mommy we still love you, but you can’t be our Mommy anymore.

When I awoke from dreaming, I looked all around;
There was my little family all sleeping safe and sound;
I knew that God was warning me that I had better repent;
So then I fell upon my knees and I prayed a sinners prayer;
Father who art in Heaven I know you gave your only son,
Forgive me and let me serve you, for I want to be ready when you come!
