Need Help Finding Song for My Grandma - Oh, what’s that I hear, is it the sound of a trumpet

Post by tab2010 » Thu Jul 31, 2025 1:23 am

My grandma needs help finding lyrics for this song she heard at The United Pentecostal Church, in Lexington, Ky, during the years between 1975 and 1985. Leanord Plowman was the pastor of the church during this time and he was the one she would hear sing it.
She only remembers the first line of the song, “Oh, what’s that I hear, is it the sound of a trumpet?”, and a line later in the song: “Soon the eastern sky will part, and I’ll see His face.”

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Tab2010,

Great news—I'm pretty sure this has been asked and answered. It's available in our archives here:

I found a recording from a memorial service posted to Facebook here. I've posted the latest lyrics there, but I'll repeat them here so you have them.

1.
Men often dream of faraway lands with strange sounding names,
Oh, but it seems that each time I dream, it's much the same;
I see a place that I have never seen before;
It's got a white pearly gate and a Father that waits
By a big open door

Chorus:
What's that I hear, is it the sound of a trumpet?
I feel the touch of a much better place
If I am dreaming, please don't awake me
For soon the eastern skies will part and I'll see His face

2.
Now this old world has lost its charm; It's no place for me.
It's that white shining throne in my new home I long to see.
I spend my days in much the same ways I wait for that sound
Then my hands will be raised with one shout of praise
Headed for higher ground.

I hope this is the one. God bless!
Steve
