If you get there before I do.....
If you get there before I do.....
One of my residents in the nursing home asked if I knew a hymn containing the line above-If you get there before I do... Sounds familiar, but I can't place it. Help please
If you get there before I do.....
This is a line that's used interchangably in many of the great old African American spirituals...I've heard it in "Michael Row the Boat Ashore", "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", and "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen"
Let me know if you need lyrics for any of those
God bless,
Steve

If you get there before I do.....
I remember parts of a song called
"Look for Me at Jesus' Feet"
It had a line similar to that. The first verse was If I should leave this world of sorrow some time before you do."
Then the 2nd verse said something vice versa..if you should leave this world sometime before I do. Theres also a song by Colin Raye, I think, If you get there before I do, dont give up on me, I'll meet you when my chores are thru.... but it is definately a country song, and not a hymn. This probably isnt what youre looking for, but maybe it will help some.. good luck, debbie

This isn't a hymn but it's a popular country ballad by Colin Raye. It's called "if you get there befoer I do" It's a sweet love song about enduring love.

If you get there before I do.....
The song posted by Guest (22 Feb) is a chorus:
Away far beyond Jordan
We'll meet in that land
O won't it be grand
Away far beyond Jordan
We'll meet in that beautiful land.
If you get there before I do
Look out for me for I'm coming too
Away far beyond Jordan
We'll meet in that beautiful land.
Away far beyond Jordan
We'll meet in that land
O won't it be grand
Away far beyond Jordan
We'll meet in that beautiful land.
If you get there before I do
Look out for me for I'm coming too
Away far beyond Jordan
We'll meet in that beautiful land.
If you get there before I do.....
Love, Me
Skip Ewing, Max T. Barnes
I read a note my grandma wrote back in nineteen twenty-three.
Grandpa kept it in his coat, and he showed it once to me. He said,
"Boy, you might not understand, but a long, long time ago,
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none, but I loved your Grandma so."
We had this crazy plan to meet and run away together.
Get married in the first town we came to, and live forever.
But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet, instead
Of her, I found this letter, and this is what it said:
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when my chores are through;
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see.
And between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me.
I read those words just hours before my Grandma passed away,
In the doorway of a church where me and Grandpa stopped to pray.
I know I'd never seen him cry in all my fifteen years;
But as he said these words to her, his eyes filled up with tears.
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when my chores are through;
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see.
And between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me.
Between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me.

When we sang this in Sunday School we ended with a loud shout of How Grand! Jean
