Turn of the 20th century hymn on Edison cylinder recording

Post by bobbop » Fri Jan 29, 2010 1:18 pm

I am trying to identify a hymn on an Edison cylinder recording made in Minneapolis about 1900. The tune is discernible, but the only words I can make out are (perhaps) "...the trump I hear, when with friends I'll meet him there..." The singer was Lt. Col. Charles T. Trowbridge, the white Civil War commander of the black 1st SC Volunteers. Trowbridge was reputed to have known the Methodist hymnal by heart. So, the song could be from the Methodist hymnal, or it could be a camp meeting song. It is in 3/4 time, and it consists of a simple 8-measure parallel period repeated for each verse.
