I V I IV
Men often dream of faraway lands with strange sounding names
I V I V
Oh but it seems that each time I dream, it's much the same
I V I IV
I see a place that I have never seen before
I V I
It's got a white pearly gate and a Father that waits
V I
By a big open door
chorus:

I feel the touch of a much better place

If I am dreaming, please don't awake me
IV I IV I
For soon the eastern skies will part
V I
And I'll see His face
Hope this helps

I am also looking for the words to a song by the same title, but it is obviously a dirrerent song. I believe the one I am looking for was written by Bill Morgan who used to live in or near Quitman or Heber Springs AR. His brother or brother-in-law or sister-in-law may have also written or cowritten some of it. They used to travel and sing during the 80's or longer. I can't remember what they were called, but they wrote and sang most of their own material.
"What's that I hear, it sounds just like a trumpet--what's that I hear in the middle of the night. Is it the sound of God's angels that I hear?" I can remember bits and pieces of the rest of the song, but not enough to put it together.

The version I always heard growing up was by The Inspirations
Re: What's That I Hear? Anyone know the words?
Just a quick follow-up. I found a recording from a memorial service posted to Facebook here, where I was able to find the second verse. Here's the complete version.
1.
Men often dream of faraway lands with strange sounding names,
Oh, but it seems that each time I dream, it's much the same;
I see a place that I have never seen before;
It's got a white pearly gate and a Father that waits
By a big open door
Chorus:
What's that I hear, is it the sound of a trumpet?
I feel the touch of a much better place
If I am dreaming, please don't awake me
For soon the eastern skies will part and I'll see His face
2.
Now this old world has lost its charm; It's no place for me.
It's that white shining throne in my new home I long to see.
I spend my days in much the same ways I wait for that sound
Then my hands will be raised with one shout of praise
Headed for higher ground.
