It can also be heard with soloist and the massed bands (pipes, brass and reed) of the Nova Scotia International Tattoo from 1999

GOING HOME
by Higher Ground Trio

Many times in my childhood we'd travel so far
By nightfall how weary I'd grow.
Father's arms would slip 'round me and gently he'd say,
"My child, we're going home."

Going home, I'm going home.
There is nothing to hold me here.
I got a glimpse of that heavenly land;
Praise God, I am going home.

Now the twilight is fading, the day soon shall end,
I get homesick the farther I roam.
But the Father has blessed me each step of the way,
And now I am going home.

Going home, I'm going home.
There is nothing to hold me here.
I caught a glimpse of that heavenly land,
Praise God, we are going home.

Praise God, we are going home.

This is a very beautiful, haunting, and peaceful song.

I am familiar with the music of this song, having heard it years ago on a classical CD of Dvorak's music, but only recently heard the lyrics to it sung by a children's choir. I didn't realized it is such a popular song for singing at funeral.

I think the best version of this song is sung by the English boys choir, LIbera that I recently watched on their newly released DVD of their concert in the Netherlands in May 2007.

You may hear them sing this song on the following youtube link:

This choir also sings a very haunting song, "Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep", also appropriate for funeral services. You can hear the song at the following youtube link:

Hi Guest,

Thanks for pointing out the link to Libera. That is certainly an amazing version.

In addition to the YouTube links, you can hear a pretty good quality preview of this and other performances at EMI's official site:

Their DVD is also available at Amazon:

I just watched Sissel on Iowa's PBS and after listening to "Going Home"(from her Northern Lights album) I came looking for the lyrics. So glad to find this site and all the info. Being an Iowan, I've long known the story of Dvorak coming to Spillville, Iowa, on a summer vacation and finishing The New World Symphony which he'd begun in New York. Spillville was a Czech community and being very homesick, Dvorak found great comfort in being there. How appropriate the lyrics, considering the circumstances under which the piece was written.

I haven't read all postings. Perhaps nobody has mentioned Phil Coulter's version with piano and bagpipe.
Can anyone help me with words and music of what I believe is a spiritual,
"Crossing Over Jordan"? Thanks.
